What is Phimosis? A tight foreskin (prepuce) medically called ‘Phimosis’ is a clinical condition where one is not able to retract the foreskin freely over glans of the penis. A tight foreskin can causes numerous issues with sexual intercourse and fertility. What is paraphimosis? Paraphimosis is when the foreskin is retracted but can’t move back to its normal position over the glans penis. In this condition retracted foreskin acts as a tight band at the base of glans and causes reduced blood flow in the penis. This condition if not corrected immediately may lead to serious problems. What are the causes of phimosis? • Tight foreskin • Infections and Unhygienic penile conditions • Irritants from Soaps and Detergents • High Blood Sugar What are the symptoms of phimosis? Symptoms can be a bit different in each individual. The most common symptoms of phimosis include: • Stuck Foreskin • Pain- while urination and retraction • Bulging of the foreskin when urinating • White ring around head of penis, Itching • Foul Smell, Lack of Sensitivity, Swelling and Redness What are the symptoms of paraphimosis? The most common symptoms of paraphimosis include: • Swelling of the tip of the penis when the foreskin is pulled back • Pain • Not able to pull the foreskin back over the tip of the penis • Tip of the penis is dark red or blue in colour • Pain when urinating • Decreased urinary stream A paraphimosis is an emergency medical condition and seek medical care right away. How are phimosis and paraphimosis diagnosed? The healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms and health history. He or she will do physical exam. The physical exam will include examining the penis and foreskin. How is phimosis treated? Treatment will depend on your symptoms, age, and general health. It will also depend on how severe the condition is. Treatment for phimosis may include: 1) Natural Treatment or Home remedies for Phimosis: Wash penis every day. Try not to use harsh soaps or lotions that can irritate your skin. Gently rinse penis with warm water. Use mild moisturizing creams called emollients such as Dermol or Hydromol to soothe the inflamed penile skin. 2) Antifungal Creams: If Phimosis is caused by a fungal/yeast infection, your doctor will prescribe antifungal ointments like clotrimazole cream etc. The doctor will tell you how to apply the ointment and for how many days. 3) Antibiotics for Phimosis: If Phimosis is caused by a bacterial infection, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics such as Cloxacillin or metronidazole for few days. The duration of oral medications depends upon the severity of Phimosis. The doctor may also ask you to apply steroid cream on the foreskin up to 3 times a day for 1 month. This is to loosen the skin. 4) Circumcision In severe and recurring cases of Phimosis where none of the above-mentioned treatment works, doctors recommend undergoing circumcision. Circumcision is the surgical procedure of removing the foreskin that permanently resolves Phimosis. How is paraphimosis treated? Treatment for paraphimosis may include: • Lubricating the foreskin and tip of the penis, then gently squeezing the tip of the penis while pulling the foreskin forward • Making a small cut (incision) in the foreskin • Having surgery to remove all or part of the foreskin (circumcision) What is Circumcision? Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin. Circumcision is performed as a religious tradition, or for treating inflammation of the penis, phimosis, paraphimosis, recurrent infections due to diabetes, and urinary tract infections. What is stapler circumcision? Stapler circumcision is a procedure where a special device, often called a ZSR stapler, is used to remove the foreskin. It's an alternative to traditional circumcision methods and offers some potential benefits like a quicker procedure, less pain and bleeding, and faster recovery. Don't Fear Circumcision • Get rid of phimosis and paraphimosis instantly • No Issues in Intercourse after Procedure • Fertility is Not Affected How does stapler circumcision work? * The stapler device typically consists of a disposable cutting and stapling device. * It's placed around the foreskin and then cuts the tissue and applies staples in a single step. * The staples are designed to fall off on their own after a few weeks. Benefits of stapler circumcision: A) Quicker procedure: It can be completed in a few minutes. B) Less pain: The procedure is generally considered less painful than traditional methods. C) Less bleeding and swelling: There is less bleeding and swelling post-procedure. D) Faster recovery: Recovery time is generally shorter compared to traditional circumcision. E) Fewer complications: Stapler circumcision may be associated with fewer complications, like severe oedema or wound dehiscence. Stapler Circumcision Procedure : 1) The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia. 2) The stapler device is placed around the foreskin and secured. 3) The device is used to cut the foreskin and apply staples. 4) The staples are left in place, and they will fall off on their own after a few weeks. Post stapler circumcision procedure care: a) Keep the area clean and dry. b) Avoid vigorous activity or sexual intercourse until cleared by your surgeon. c) The staples will fall off on their own, usually within a few weeks. d) Recovery typically takes a few weeks. Why should you opt for Circumcision? • To avoid difficulty in sexual intercourse in case of a tight foreskin (the skin covering the tip of the penis) • To prevent recurrent infection in patients with uncontrolled diabetes • To reduce the risk of kidney damage due to urinary tract infection • To follow religious norms in certain cultures (particularly in new-borns) • To stop the spread of STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) What is the Cost of circumcision Surgery? Cost of Treatment depends on the following factors: a) Local Penile condition b) Severity of the Disease c) Any other Pre-existing Medical Condition of Patient like Diabetes, Hypertension, Allergies, Asthma etc. which require special medical attention d) It is recommended that the patient come for Consultation and Evaluation first, Understand all available options, and then make the Final Decision.
