Description
An ingrown toenail is a common problem where the edges of the corners of nail grows, curls and digs down into skin surrounding the affected toe nail bed margins. This condition is also called Onychogryphosis. An Ingrown Toenail typically occurs over big toe of foot but any toe can be affected. An Ingrown Toenail is a painful condition and frequently associated with infection. The risk of infection is higher in diabetics. It can occur both in men and women equally. Causes Of Ingrown Toenails: 1) Redness around the affected toenail 2) Swelling and itching 3) Pain and tenderness 4) Abscess over the affected toe 5) Bleeding from nail margins 6) Overgrowth of the skin near the toenail margins Causes of Ingrown Toenails: 1) Wearing of too tight, too small or pointed front shaped shoes. 2) Cutting the margins of toe nail too short. 3) Injury or stubbing of toenail. 4) Putting pronged duration pressure on toenails and involvement in activities like ballet, kickboxing, soccer and football. Treatment of Ingrown toenails: Ingrown toenails can be treated with a combination of home care and, if necessary, professional medical intervention. Home care involves soaking the foot in warm water, applying antibiotic cream, and wearing comfortable, open-toed shoes. For more severe cases, a doctor may need to remove the ingrown portion of the nail or use other surgical procedures. Home Care: A) Soaking: Soak the affected foot in warm water for 15-20 minutes several times a day to reduce swelling and inflammation. B) Antibiotic Cream: Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic cream to prevent infection. C) Cotton or Dental Floss: Gently place a small piece of cotton or dental floss under the edge of the nail to help lift it away from the skin. D) Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage pain. E) Footwear: Wear sandals or other open-toed shoes to allow air circulation and prevent further irritation. F) Hygiene: Keep the foot dry and clean after soaking and showering. May apply suitable moisturiser cream if its too dry. Medical Intervention: 1) Nail Trimming or Removal: Your doctor may trim or remove the ingrown portion of the nail under local anaesthesia. 2) Chemical Matrixectomy: This procedure permanently removes the nail root to prevent regrowth, often recommended for recurring ingrown toenails. 3) Zadek's Procedure: Similar to chemical matrixectomy, this procedure involves removing the nail root to prevent regrowth.
